Migrant Settlement Program
What is it?
A free service to help migrants settle in Mackay. We work with individuals and families to increase knowledge, independence and access to services in the community. We are happy to use an interpreter if needed.
Who is eligible?
- Permenent residents who have arrived in the last 5 years as humanitarian entrants or family stream migrants who have difficulty with English.
- Dependents of skilled migrants who have difficulty with English.
- Some temporary residents (prospective marriage, provisional spouse, provisional interdependancy visa holders and their dependents) who have difficulty with English.
- Communities which require assistance to develop their capacity and who are still recieving significant numbers of new arrivals.
We provide:
- Information about driving, health services, public transport, schools and activities for children, renting, staying safe and making friends.
- Access to services in the community - employment, English classes, Centrelink, housing, volunteering, Department of Transport
- Help making appointments eg. Doctors, government departments
- Driver education classes - bus pick up in the city area. 5 week course, 2 hours per week. Bookings are necessary.
- Links to volunteering oppurtunities.
