About Us
The George Street Neighbourhood Centre is your community centre. The community workers at the centre are available for information and referrals, support, community education and community development. If you would like to suggest changes to situations in your community or be part of a group with similar interests / needs, please give us a call on 4957 2626.
What is a Neighbourhood Centre?
Neighbourhood Centres are unique because they respond to the needs of their local communities. George Street Neighbourhood Centre is a place where everyone is treated equally with respect, regardless of age, race, gender or ability. At George Street Neighbourhood Centre everyone has the opportunity to develop skills, build self-esteem, interact with others in our community and have fun.
Mission Statement
The George Street Neighbourhood Centre seeks to develop a community that supports, responds to and includes families and individuals within the community.
Objectives of the Service
The objectives of the George Street Neighbourhood Centre are:
- to increase the sense of social belonging for families and individuals within the community;
- to be aware of community needs and issues, and respond accordingly;
- to offer a quality service in an informed, caring and confidential manner; and
- to ensure that the Centre maintains a welcoming atmosphere.

Community Facilities
Community facilities that are available at the George Street Neighbourhood Centre include:
- Community noticeboard
- Community resource library
- Photocopying
- Faxes - can be sent and received for a small charge
- Laminating
- Community computer - available for use by community members. Please make a booking to use the computer.
Shakespeare Child and Family Centre
In 2008 the Queensland Government established the Shakespeare Child and Family Centre in Mackay—the first of ten new Early Childhood Education and Care Centres to open statewide. The Shakespeare Child and Family Centre is managed by the George Street Neighbourhood Centre in partnership with the Mackay Children’s Support Program.
